Brimfield Emergency Action Plan

Brimfield Township is currently working to develop an Emergency Action Plan for the Brimfield Community. Trustee, Mike Kostensky has asked the Police and Fire Department’s to develop a plan to handle large scale emergency situations that could quickly overwhelm our township resources. More details.

The Brimfield Township Fire Department was organized in 1934 as a volunteer fire department and was housed in the building now used for township meetings. Today, the fire department has combination of full and part time firefighters and is staffed 24 hours a day.

Services
The fire department provides both fire and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) in the community and is equipped with two fire pumpers, one tanker truck, a crash rescue truck and two emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Advanced life support equipment and defibrillators are carried on both medical units and the crash rescue truck.

The Fire Department responds to 900 calls for emergency service each year including structure fires , medical emergencies, motor vehicle crashes, hazardous material releases, fire alarms and technical rescue. Non emergency service is also provided and includes well being checks, blood pressure monitoring, invalid assistance, fire safety inspections, smoke and odor investigations, fire safety education and CPR classes. The department also participates as a partner in the south Portage County Hazardous Materials Response Team.

Fire Safety for our youth
Fire safety education is taught in the elementary schools beginning at the kindergarten level. In particular, Freddie the Fire Truck, a remote controlled fire truck, is a guaranteed hit with the children. Adult fire safety education is also available and includes fire extinguisher training and CPR classes.

Preparing for community growth
The community of Brimfield is growing and the Fire Department is planning for the future. Approximately 1300 new residential units are planned for construction during the next three years and plans for the expansion of water and sewer lines promises Commercial and industrial growth during the next decade.

Our changing role means new challenges to meet community needs
The fire service is no longer responsible solely for fire protection. The role of the Fire Department has changed and involves managing community risk. Nearly three quarters of our emergency responses are for EMS service. The Brimfield Township Fire Department looks forward to the challenges of the new millennium and meeting the needs of our growing community!
